Creating a New Cultural Landscape Lesson Plan

Objective:   Describe how English, Irish and German immigrants influenced the cultural landscape of the Valley of Virginia.

Activity: In this activity, the students will write an explanation of how the English, Irish and German immigrants influenced the cultural landscape of the Valley through architecture, farming, food processing and education.

Procedure:

1. Divide the class into three groups, assign each group one country.

2. Have each group create a list of focus questions and have them use the library or internet to find the answers.

3. Tour the Frontier Culture Museum.

4. Using knowledge gained from the field trip and research, have the students write an explanation of how each group of immigrants contributed to the cultural landscape of the Valley.

Assessment: Create a rubric, scoring using the following categories: number of resources, number of primary sources, number of questions, length of report, and presentation.
